Opening Reception, Black Lives Matter Exhibition

4:00 PM
Professor M. Shadee Malaklou, 2018 Parker Faculty Curator, has assembled an exhibition with students from her upcoming Critical Identity Studies Class,Black Lives Matter. She has spent two years working
with students to research and propose acquisitions and loans. Some of the topics they have explored include racial blackness and humanism, the convergence of Black Death and sexual terror, and art representative of Negritude. The upcoming Black Lives exhibition, opening November 29, 2018, is rooted in the Black Lives Matter movement and explores discourses of modernity and humanism that exclude black persons from human recognitions and protections. The exhibition will ask how black lives can matter, if at all, and selected works will interrogate the relationship between gaze, humanism, and anti-blackness. Works by black artists including Leroy Campbell, Kara Walker, Lorna Simpson, and Della Wells will be presented.
